Password Expiration - NMSU-owned Computer

.

ICT has become aware of a situation regarding NMSU-owned computers that are being used off-campus where the user is notified their password is about to expire. There are two types of computers being used from home, ones that are joined to an NMSU Active Directory Domain and ones that are not joined (and are members of Workgroups).

How do I know if I am affected?
  • Press the Windows Key + R on the keyboard, and type control /name Microsoft.System and click on “OK".
  • Look under “Computer name, domain and workgroup settings” here.
  • If you see “Domain”: followed by the name of a domain, your computer is joined to a domain.
  • The images below show both a local workgroup and a domain-joined computer:

So What do I do?
  • If your computer says WORKGROUP or anything else in the WORKGROUP field, you will be completely unaffected when changing your passphrase via MyNMSU.
  • If your computer says ACN.ad.nmsu.edu, (or any other domain) YOU SHOULD NOT CHANGE YOUR PASSPHRASE ON MYNMSU WHILE WORKING FROM HOME! Instead, you must connect to the "NMSU VPN" system via "Cisco AnyConnect VPN", then press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys on your keyboard and select “Change Password” from the resultant list of options on the blue screen; you’ll be prompted to enter your old (current) passphrase, then a new 17+ character passphrase (and a second copy of it to confirm it)
  • Then you’ll click on the white arrow next to the confirmation version of your new passphrase to save it on "NMSU’s Domain Controllers". You must then "lock your PC" by pressing the Windows Key + L on the keyboard and enter your "new passphrase" to unlock it. At that point, your passphrase has been changed.

Note: There could be a small delay for your new passphrase to be linked to MyNMSU and related systems, but it will synchronize.

If you all have any questions, need assistance with, or would like to chat about this, contact NMSU ICT Help Desk at 646-1840, via email, Help@nmsu.edu or Help Desk Zoom room (MeetingID = icthelpdesk).
