Modem - Resetting/Recycling the Modem

It is sometimes necessary to "Reset" a cable modem by powering it off and back on again for it to regain a valid IP and network settings.

Problem

You may need to restart the modem if your home computer is unable to retrieve a valid IP address or there is an interruption in service that is not resolved by checking network settings and restarting your computer. This advice is only applicable if you are using a cable internet provider such as Charter (in the Madison area).

Solution

Recycling the cable modem may solve the connectivity issue. To do so:

  1. Unplug the power cord at the back of the modem.
Note: Modems that are necessary for internet access in Family Housing, VDM, and other housing groups have a power button located on the back of the device.
NOTICE: Do not push the Reset (on the older models) and/or the WPS/RST (on the newer models) buttons. This will reset all pre-set information that allows the modem to be recognized by the network and disable you from connecting to the internet. If you do push this button please use the contact information at the bottom of this document for the ICT department. They will be able to assist you in regaining connectivity and/or troubleshooting other issues.

ON OFF Switch

      2. Wait 20 seconds and plug the power cord back in and/or press the on/off button located on the back of each device, as indicated above.

      3. Wait for the modem to re-sync up with internet service provider. This could take a minute or two.

Note: As the modem recycles to the network the lights associated with each connection will illuminate. Once the Internet light turns green you should test for your access to the internet.

     4. The new modem/router hardware that is being installed as on Fall 2017 has the network password located on the bottom of the device. You will use this password to when prompted, on a device, to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
