McAfee - Prepare Your Windows Computer to Download Consumer Products

Follow these steps to get your Windows PC ready to install your McAfee software.

Before you start:
  • You might need to restart your PC to solve the issue, so bookmark or favorite this article to get back to it quickly.
  • Ensure that your PC meets the minimum installation requirements shown in TS102471.
When you have verified that your PC meets the minimum requirements, do these steps in order:

Step 1: Ensure Windows is up-to-date
This helps to avoid issues with your McAfee software during and after installation.
  1. Click the Start Windows Start Menu icon button on the bottom left of your Windows desktop.
  2. In the search box:
    1. Type Windows update.
    2. Press ENTER.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Follow the prompts. Windows will download and apply any important updates.
NOTE: You can also follow the steps in the Microsoft Windows Update FAQ.

Step 2: Download and run the McAfee Pre-Install Tool
This prepares your PC for the installation of your McAfee software.
  1. Download the Pre-Install Tool.
NOTE: Save the file to a temporary location, such as your desktop.
  1. Double-click the Pre-Install_Tool.exe file, and follow the prompts.
  2. Read the warning message, and click OK to agree to the changes.
  3. After the Preinstall Tool completes:
    1. Click OK.
    2. Click Close.
    3. Restart your computer.

Step 3: Uninstall any existing security software
Remove any existing security products (anti-virus, firewalls, and so on) to avoid conflicts. This includes older McAfee software.

For a list of incompatible third-party applications and how to remove them, see TS102253.

Step 4: Run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool
If you have ever had a McAfee product installed on your computer, you should run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) tool to clean up any old files.
  • Always download a new copy of MCPR before each use.
This ensures that you have the latest version, and that newer McAfee products can be successfully recognized.
  • MCPR will clean up only the components needed for reinstallation. It is not designed to clean up 100% of components.
  • Completing this step will require a restart.
Before you start:
  • Bookmark or favorite this article so that you can easily get back to it.
  • Save all open files.
  • Close all programs.
  1. Download the MCPR tool.
  2. Double-click MCPR.exe.
  3. If you see a security warning:

Click YesContinue, or Run (depending on your version of Windows):

Active image: open and run software removal

  4. At the McAfee Software Removal screen:
    1. Click Next
    2. Click Agree to accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
  5. At the Security Validation screen:
    1. Type the characters exactly as shown on your screen (validation is case-sensitive).
    2. Click Next. This step prevents the accidental use of MCPR.

  6. When the process is complete, you will see one of the following messages. Click the one that you see.

  1. Restart your PC to complete the removal process.

IMPORTANT: When your PC restarts, it will not be protected from viruses and malware. Ensure that you reinstall your security software as soon as possible to remain protected (see below).

If you see this message, the cleanup did not go as planned:
  1. Restart your PC and run MCPR again.
  2. If you see Cleanup Unsuccessful again, ignore it.
  3. Restart your PC again.
  4. Attempt to reinstall your McAfee software.
If you are still unable to install:
  1. Click here to contact Technical Support.
  2. Let the agent know:
    • MCPR produced a Cleanup Unsuccessful message.
    • You are unable to reinstall your McAfee software.

After completing these steps, your PC is ready to install the McAfee software.

  • Temporarily disable pop-up or ad blockers
If your browser has a pop-up blocker, temporarily disable it. This reduces the possibility of it interfering with your installation.

Look in the Settings or Options menu of your browser to disable your pop-up blocker, and remember to enable it again when your installation is complete.
  • Run Windows Disk Defragmenter
Defragmenting your hard drives improves performance.
NOTE: If you have a Solid-State Disk (SSD) instead of a mechanical (spinning) hard drive, you do not need to defragment it.

    To run the defragmenter:
    1. Click the Start Windows start menu icon button on the bottom left of your Windows desktop.
    2. In the search box, type defragment and press ENTER.
      • On Windows 10.x, and 8.x:
