Install PuTTY SSH Client (Windows)
There are several reasons why someone may use the PuTTY to connect to an (SSH) but this tutorial will focus on its uses for editing your web.nmsu.edu website.
This video will assist you through the process of connecting to a secure socket shell or (SSH) using PuTTY. There is also accompanying documentation if you prefer to follow the instruction without the video.
Windows PuTTY Secure Socket Shell (SSH) Client Install and Launch
Open your web browser and type "www.putty.org" in the search bar and press enter.
Once the page loads navigate to the link, found toward the top of the page, under "Download Putty" and click on the link. After the page loads continue to the next step.
On this page navigate to the first set of links found under the title "Package Files" and choose the version of PuTTY appropriate to the version of Windows that you are running.
Note: If you are not sure what version of Windows you are running please click here, for documentation that can help you find out.
Once you determine the appropriate version for your operating system download the package files and click on the ".msi" installer file that has been downloaded.
Note: This file will have the same name as the link you chose, "putty-0.70-installer.msi" or "putty-64-bit-0.70-installer.msi". After you initiate the installer please continue.
The first window of the installer will simply inform you of the action that you are about to initiate. Place click next when you are ready to continue.
The next window will ask you to choose you "destination folder" and will be preset to your "program files" folder. This is the default location for all new installations if you would like to change this do so now and click next when you are ready to continue.
This window will ask you to select your "Product Features". The default settings are adequate to accomplish the above-stated tasks but if you would like to make any adjustment please do so now and click the Install button when you are ready to continue.
After the installation process has finished a "read me" text will appear, review this and close it when you are ready to continue.
Navigate to your "Start" menu and locate the PuTTY program. Here you will see several options but you want to select the one simply entitled "PuTTY". Click on this option to launch the PuTTY program.
Once the PuTTY program loads you will need to type web.nmsu.edu for the "Host Name". After this, you need to check that the box under "Port" is set to 22. You can now navigate to the bottom of the screen and click open.
The previous step will launch the terminal. Here you will be prompted to "log in as". Use your myNMSU information when prompted for a username and password, press enter.
Note: A login time should be displayed when you are connected. If this does not happen and your session times out you will need to close the program and start back at "Step 9".
